On February 12th the Dutch High Court ruled that the Netherlands must stop exporting F35 fighter jet components to Israel. Two weeks before February 12th the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel is plausibly committing genocide. This must be the beginning of the end for the genocidal regime.
Though the ICJ order is imperfect, it signals a new phase in the application of international law with regard to Palestine and has dealt a significant political blow to Israel. It is now on trial for genocide and its right to self defence has been firmly rejected by the court. Predictably, Israel criticised the court ruling as being anti-Semitic and has so far refused to obey it, instead carrying on with its genocidal war on Gaza. It is planning to unleash a full-scale ground invasion of Rafah, where 1.5 million people are desperately seeking shelter.
In line with the ICJ ruling and duties under the Genocide Convention, all states must immediately impose an arms embargo, break trade relations and cut ties with Israel. The Dutch Court ruling is an important first step in the right direction. Meanwhile, the global Palestine solidarity movement must use the ICJ ruling to exert political pressure so that it is no longer tenable for states, institutions, universities, sporting and cultural bodies, and all other entities to continue relations with the Israeli regime.
The struggle of the Palestinian people has become the pinnacle of a global peoples’ movement against colonialism and imperialism. Former colonised nations must follow South Africa’s lead and rise up. US empire has never been so unpopular while the global Palestine solidarity movement has never been stronger. The genocidal war on Gaza must be the point of no return. There can be no more business as usual until Palestine is free.
